It does not matter the age of the recipient. Once they see this thing come flying out of the card. It really takes off. They will be having a great time playing with it over and over.
It never fails to take everyone by surprise.
All you do is wind it up (directions on the package), slide it into a letter or card, put it in the envelope and wait for it to be opened to let the fun out. They fly quite nicely. If the recipient has a small home or one with a lot of fragile items, I would not suggest winding it 40 times as the package says to help prevent any breakage of items once the butterfly is let loose.
These would not be good as "toys", but are rather a novelty item. They do break, and I broke two of them by winding the 20-times reccommended and having the plastic frame break.
