Have wanted one of these for years but wasn't sure how effective they were...it does indeed work well on small and large bits, the former having always been a challenge to sharpen by hand. Instructions were a bit confusing with regard to the step where you set the depth and alignment of the bit in the chuck. There is a rib that goes into the angle setting slots but there is also a white dot on the chuck and I initially thought that should like up with the angle setting slots. Once I figured that out, it has been smooth sailing. It''s great to be able to accurately and rapidly grind bits after years of futzing with them or making due with dull bits because they are a hassle to sharpen.

I have already sharpened about 40 dull bits and even split point a few, and the grinding stone hardly shows any wear. I have not tested the bits in steel yet but did a test in wood and they provide a concentric and smooth bore after sharpening. Before sharpening the bits required a steady push and the exit was ragged. I tried the bits in soft and hardwood which gave me a good indication of its abilities to properly cut the angles required. The tool takes some getting used to but I honestly believe that after only ten bits I became an expert. Take your time when starting out and try not to slap yourself for thinking it was too expensive and not buying it sooner.

I did learn a couple of things. The first was that it can require removing quite a bit of material from the drill bit to get the proper angle. The solution there is to spend the additional money to get the 100 grit diamond wheel. That works great, especially on larger bits; and it is much, much faster. The second is that when you have to remove a bit of metal from the bit the bit can get hot. My solution was to get another chuck so I can have two drills working and give one some time to cool while I sharpen another. Once you get the depth of the bit set you don't want to disturb it so the second chuck works great.

My initial impression of this was not great. I didn't pay enough intentions to the instructions and for some reason kept on trying the 118 degree sharpening angle. I eventually ended up with a box full of dull bits and decided to work with it again instead of buying new bits. I also decided to try the 135 degree sharpening angle and splitting the point. I discovered that this is the secret to success; and I went on a sharpening jag. I have two 29 point drill bit sets and took every bit out and chucked it up in the drill press and pulled out all that didn't drill well and sharpened them. Before putting them back in the drill index I test drilled with them all. Then I attacked the box of maybe 100 bits from 1/8 up to 5/8 and sharpened them; with great success.

This tool is ready to go, right out of the box. I unpacked it, did a quick scan of the operator's manual and was sharpening my first drill bit in less than 10 minutes. Warning, It is adictive! I ended up sharpening every bit in one of my drill bit organizers. Once you get set up and going, it takes about 30 seconds to a minute to sharpen a bit. One suggestion. Start with your largest bit (3/4" max) and work your way down to your smallest bit (3/32" min) using that method is faster since it just takes a twist or two of the collar to adjust it to the next smaller size. I love this thing and would still be sharpening drill bits, if my wife hadn't done an intervention.

I'm required to drill into stainless steel daily. Before I bought a Drill Docter I was sharpening my bits on a bench grinder. Even though after awhile you get pretty good at getting the angles right, you still take off more steel on the grinder than with this Drill Doctor. I went from buying new bits every month to about every 3 months now. I recommend this unit because you can choose your grinding depth.

I needed to drill a 17/64" hole in a grade 5 1/2" bolt. I owned three 17/64" cobalt drill bits. Not one was sharp enough to make more than a dimple in the bolt... with much smoke and screeching at that. As I am a fan of expensive solutions to simple problems, I purchased this item. After 10 minutes of video tutorial and 3 minutes of futzing, my drill press was turning out these beautiful shavings from the first drill bit I sharpened. Although I haven't got the geometry or technique perfect yet, with a little more practice, this item will pay for itself handily.

This thing works great. I just sharpened a drill index from 1/8 to 1/2 in about 30 minutes. All of them turned out great, even the first one! I watched a couple of you tube videos first to get advice on the set up. The key is getting the indexing correct and then making sure you are up against the guide post with the cam as you sharpen the bit. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to turn the smaller bits in the chuck to get the indexing correct. It is hard to reach smaller bits with your fingers. I highly recommend this drill bit sharpener.

How dumb was I to wait so long. This tools has already saved me a LOT of money not buying new drill bits, not to mention the gas for trips to the hardware store to get new bits in the middle of a project. You need to read the instructions carefully and follow them carefully until you have learned how to use this thing properly and then one day and after some practice its like magic...drill bits cut even better than they did new!
