   I purchased the Outward Hound Standley float coat for my German Wirehair Pointer who weighs in at about 62 pounds. The coat was extremely adjustable to fit his deep chest and narrow waist. My GWP is a water dog deluxe! He LOVES to swim. I purchased this to take him stand up paddle boarding with me. He didn't need life saving flotation, but just a little support while paddling in the open bay. The open structure of the coat does not restrict his movement whatsoever.

   I got this life vest because my dog likes to get in the water but doesn't swim. She stands or sits but won't go past the point where she can't touch. I thought this might help get her more comfortable with deeper water and help her get her swimming legs. While she still doesn't go swimming on her own, this vest has helped improve her swimming and allowed us to toss her off the dock and easily pull her back up when she's ready. My boyfriend carried her out into Lake Michigan and let her swim back a few times on our vacation and she learned to use her hind legs in addition to her front legs so she's not splashing around so much. She would have had a much harder time figuring that out if she wasn't wearing the life vest. It's also nice for when we go out on the pontoon because there isn't a ladder for the dog and we can pull her back up with the handles if needed.

   Reasonable price for an interim float vest that our puppy will grow out of. And it works very well. Not restrictive and it helped keep our 10 week old border collie (who is already jumping into the pool) safe in the water. She is an enthusiastic swimmer (now 16 weeks old) who is not yet strong enough to keep her rear end floating. Without the vest she goes vertical when she tries to turn and starts sinking. Nice amount of adjustment too. I expect her to be able to wear this size until she is 7 months or so, then I"ll buy another size and have this one for our next puppy!

   We have a border collie mix who absolutely loves going in water, but he would splash around and panic when he got in water that was too deep. I'm so glad I got the one for novice swimmers, he's an athletic and strong dog but none of the others would have been sufficient. He still has absolute terrible form and slaps his front legs on the water, but at least he can float and fetch in the process. This is an amazing doggie vest.

   This life vest is the perfect size and length for my 35 lb. dachshund mix. She has a longer body than other dogs so getting the length right was key. It's very quick and easy to strap onto her when we're ready to get into the water. The under belly strap is strong and secure which is especially important because I use the two top handle straps to pick her up off of my boat deck and slowly lower her onto any watercraft that we're using that day (e.g., kayak, paddle board, lily pad, canoe, motor boat, etc.) where it wouldn't be easy to on or off board her otherwise. I'm a big fan of this life vest for that reason alone. Other than that, it floats (obviously) and conveniently keeps her head above water (via the front little floaty attachment) and allows for pretty good ease of motion when she's swimming around.

It prevents that awful penciling of the dog swimming in a vertical mode trying to climb out of the water. It comfortable has a back strap so you can lift the dog out of the water easily and the dog gets underbelly support that protects it's back.

   Doggie life jackets run the range from absolute crap to human-worthy support. Outward Hound is definitely the latter. I have a standard poodle who weighs about 55 pounds - long body, long legs, deep chest and small waist - so he can be tricky to fit. The large Dawson Buoyant life jacket fit him perfect, with enough adjustability to fit both his chest and waist. The color is perfect because I can see it from far away, and so can boaters. My dog can swim, but sometimes I need to haul him out of the water into my kayak, and it is impossible without a handle, so this life jacket makes it easy to get him into the boat. It also acts as peace of mind if I fall in the water and can't help him, because it helps him stay afloat even when he isn't paddling.

   First I tried one (same brand) with Velcro on the belly area. Dog didn’t like it, too much fiddling and sliding around. I didn’t like the Velcro either; it’s clumsy and not even well spaced for the size of the jacket. Doesn’t feel very secure either. So I ordered this one which has two snaps and no Velcro. Dog loves it so much it’s like clothing, wants it back on even after I take it off. Very easy to use.
