You just plug it in, adjust the dial to how far you want it to throw the ball, and drop the ball in the shoot. It makes a beeping sound to warn that it's about to spit out the ball. It launches the ball pretty far! Our dog kept getting the ball but she just dropped it for us to put it in the machine, she hasn't figured out how to put it in herself yet. It comes with one tennis ball to get you started but it will shoot any standard tennis ball. If you don't have anywhere to plug it in outside, it can go on batteries but it takes 8 D's.
